What Liposuction Can Do for You

Many people think liposuction is a weight loss procedure, but it is actually a body contouring procedure. The goal is to help you achieve the best possible body shape, which is better for your appearance. For most people, weight is just a number, and even if you are at or near your ideal weight, you may be unhappy with your appearance. By helping you get rid of a few unsightly bulges here or there, liposuction can give you increased confidence wearing many different types of clothes, or when undressed.

Your Liposuction will be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon at Marietta Plastic Surgery located in Marietta, GA just outside of Atlanta.

Uses for Liposuction

Liposuction is a very effective technique useful in reducing fat in almost any area of the body. Liposuction can be used to reduce excessive fat in:

  • Abdomen (stomach)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Neck and jowls
  • Chest (such as male breast reduction)

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but a body contouring procedure. By targeting stubborn fat deposits it can help reshape your body’s curves and define muscular structure that has been hidden under fat deposits.

Tumescent Liposuction

At Marietta Plastic Surgery, our preferred liposuction method is tumescent liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is a commonly practiced technique. It is a tried-and-true method and has been in practice since the mid-’80s.

With this technique, blood loss during and after the procedure is limited. Before tumescent liposuction was in wide use, many patients were required to undergo blood transfusion due to the amount of blood loss involved in liposuction. Limiting blood loss is important for the patient’s healing process.

Another perk of tumescent liposuction is that it reduces bruising after the procedure. Bruising is reduced because there is so little blood loss. This improves the rate of healing and reduces the degree of swelling that affects the treated areas after the procedure.

The word “tumescent” means swollen and firm, and this describes the technique’s temporary effects. The procedure for tumescent liposuction consists of injecting a solution comprised of saline and local anesthesia into the areas where you desire to have fat deposits reduced. This solution features lidocaine and epinephrine and is injected in a high volume into the fat layer beneath the skin.

The solution numbs the area, constricts the blood vessels, helps prevent dehydration, and generally causes the tissues of the area to become swollen and firm. After application of tumescent fluid, fat can then be removed by suction through a thin hollow tube called a cannula.

Tumescent liposuction has several benefits:

  • Minimizes bleeding and bruising
  • Is an outpatient procedure
  • Has a relatively short recovery period
  • Results in less postoperative discomfort
  • Helps prevent dehydration

There are newer liposuction technologies available, generally claiming some form of technological innovation, our surgeons have tried them, but found they are more promise than performance. The cost for the machines significantly increases the cost of the procedure often without providing any tangible benefit for you. Our surgeons are constantly evaluating the newest technologies, and can offer them. If you want to learn about a specialized liposuction technology, we can help you understand the costs and benefits associated with that technology before you undergo the procedure. In most cases, the skill of the surgeon makes a far greater difference in your procedure and results than the machine used.

Realistic Expectations for Liposuction Procedure

While liposuction may seem like the best way to achieve your ideal body shape, it is important to have realistic goals and expectations about any plastic surgery procedure. If you are interested in removing small stubborn fat deposits and defining your underlying shape, liposuction may be the right solution for you. However, if you are interested in removing larger amounts of fat as well as excess skin, a tummy tuck or body lift may be the better option.

When you meet with one of our plastic surgeons, he will provide you with the best available information to help you make your decision. At our surgical facility, you will be treated with care and compassion, regardless of your motivation for undergoing liposuction, and will undergo treatment in the safest possible environment in accordance with AAAASF accreditation standards.
