Atlanta Tummy TuckMany men and women feel self-conscious about a sagging belly, perhaps due to excess weight gain, pregnancy or other factors. No matter the cause, it can be difficult to get rid of. Even if you are able to lose weight, you may be left with hanging skin and slack abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck can remove your unwanted fat and skin and tighten your abdominal muscles to provide you with a trimmer silhouette. A tummy tuck is a significant surgical procedure, but also provides more dramatic results than less invasive procedures. Unique to Marietta Plastic Surgery, we also offer a drainless tummy tuck option, designed to reduce recovery time, discomfort and inconvenience.

  • A quicker and more comfortable recovery
  • No drain-related maintenance, pain, or scarring
  • No anxiety related to post-op drain management
  • No risk of drain-associated retrograde bacterial migration and infection

Causes for Excess Fat and Skin

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is ideal for someone who wants to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and surrounding regions. A tummy tuck will remove inches from the affected area, and can dramatically improve the results of dramatic weight loss. You may have excess fat or skin from:

  • Pregnancies
  • Genetics
  • Massive weight loss
  • Hormonal changes

Abdominoplasty can be supplemented with liposuction to remove fat from nearby the treated area and improve the overall results.

Your Tummy Tuck will be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon at Marietta Plastic Surgery located in Marietta, GA just outside of Atlanta.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Mini Tummy Tuck – A mini tummy tuck is used when you only need tightening below the navel. A single incision is made above the pubic area, where any resulting scarring can be easily hidden under clothing, even swimsuits. The skin and fat are surgically separated from the underlying muscular structure, which is then sutured to create a tighter, smoother underlying muscle structure. The skin is pulled tightly downward and the excess skin removed. Stitches are used to keep the skin in its new, flatter position.

Full Tummy Tuck – A full tummy tuck can improve the contour of your entire abdomen. An additional incision around the navel is used and the skin separated from the higher abdominal muscles as well as the lower ones. The procedure is otherwise the same, with the exception of the scar around the navel. The length of the first incision along the pubic line is determined by the amount of skin to be removed in both a mini and full tummy tuck.

Extended Tummy Tuck – An extended tummy tuck addresses the love handle area in addition to the front of the abdomen. The procedure is the same as for the full tummy tuck, with the exception that the incision may extend over the hips toward the back. In this instance the abdomen, waist, and hips are affected. An outer thigh lift may be incorporated with this procedure.

Circumferential Body Lift – Your incision will extend all the way around your body, smoothing and removing excess skin from the abdomen, waist, hips, and back, usually including a buttock lift with the procedure. A circumferential body lift is the most extensive type of tummy tuck and is most often performed for patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery resulting in massive weight loss.

Tummy Tuck Recovery and Results

A nerve block may be used to reduce discomfort after the tummy tuck procedure, and after the procedure medication will be prescribed to help with pain management. With a traditional tummy tuck, drainage tubes will be inserted to help direct fluid buildup away from the healing sites, and will be removed when the drainage slows or stops, which may be as little as a few days or may take several weeks. With a drainless tummy tuck, internal dissolvable sutures are placed under the skin to close off the space where the drains would go and thus eliminate the need for them. Many patients, who found the idea of drainage tubes unappealing, are finding that the drainless tummy tuck may be a good choice for them.

In addition to sutures and possible drainage tubes, you will be fitted with bandages, which will be removed after a few days, and a compression garment which you should wear for four to six weeks to help minimize swelling and bruising, as well as support your skin and muscles while they are healing. You will be encouraged to begin taking short walks in the days after surgery to encourage blood circulation and clear the lungs, and you should always return promptly for each scheduled follow-up appointment.

You will notice a significant difference immediately; however, it may take as long as 3 months, and in some people longer, for the swelling to resolve and reveal your final result.
