Basics of Breast Augmentation

The breast gets its size and shape from the fatty tissue, milk ducts, pectoral muscle, and ribs, as well as the breast skin. During breast augmentation, a breast implant is placed either behind the breast or behind the pectoral muscle to increase the size and potentially change the shape of the breast.

Breast augmentation can be used to alter:

• Breasts that are too small
• Breasts that have an undesired shape
• Breasts that are out of proportion with your figure
• Breasts that are asymmetric (of different sizes or shapes)
• Breasts that are slightly sagging (more severely drooping breasts may require a breast lift or breast reduction)
