A facelift, or in medical terms a rhytidectomy, is a surgery that helps to improve the appearance of the face and give the face a more youthful look. Facelifts are very common, as they help lift up sagging loose skin on the face and smooth out deep folds and wrinkles.

What Is the Short-Scar Facelift?

There are different types of facelift techniques depending on what exactly the patient is looking for. The short-scar facelift is a quite popular technique. This type of facelift focuses on uplifting and rejuvenating the mid-face region, including wrinkles around the nose and mouth.

A short-scar facelift can help reduce the harsh appearance of the folds that stretch from the corners of the mouth to the corners of the nose, also known as the nasolabial folds. A short-scar facelift can help to give you firmer and tighter cheeks.

This procedure suits those people who want to refine and uplift the central portion of their faces and can give them better-defined cheekbones.

If you are looking for rejuvenation of the upper or lower face, different plastic surgery procedures and facelift techniques may be recommended to you during your consultation at our office.

Why Do Patients Come In for the Short-Scar Facelift?

People who have reached their 40s or 50s will start to have loose sagging skin around the middle portion of their faces, which can give away their age and make them look older than they might like. A short-scar facelift is a quick, easy, and effective way to remove years from the face and make patients look younger.

The Short-Scar Facelift Procedure

This procedure typically only requires around two hours to complete. At the start of a short-scar facelift, general anesthesia is administered to the patient in order to induce temporary unconsciousness. This makes it so the patient will not feel pain or discomfort during the procedure.

In comparison to a traditional facelift, a short-scar facelift involves smaller incisions that create much smaller post-surgical marks. These incisions are created in front of the patient’s ears. They avoid the hairline, making it so the height of the hairline is unaffected.

Once the incisions are created, the surgeon is able to access the underlying tissues. The connective tissue, muscles, and skin in the mid-face are then altered as needed to tighten the mid-face. This will include removal of excess tissue. Because less tissue is altered than in the traditional facelift, the recovery time will be much shorter.

As soon as the tissue alteration has been completed, the incisions are sealed with the help of medical sutures.

The Recovery Period

After your short-scar facelift, you will have a degree of facial swelling and bruising. This should be less than that of a full facelift. Keeping your head elevated is recommended.

Patients of the short-scar facelift require around one to three weeks to heal and recover. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will give you full instructions on what to do during your recovery process.
