Atlanta, Marietta, and Woodstock, Georgia Nose Surgeon

If you are self-conscious about the shape of your nose, you may find it difficult to interact naturally with others, and a lack of self-esteem might have already led you to try outfits, hairstyles, and accessories to minimize the appearance of your nose. Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery and can greatly impact your appearance and self-esteem.

This page contains some basic information about the rhinoplasty procedure, but the best way to learn how this procedure might be able to help you is by scheduling a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon. To talk to one of our surgeons about a possible rhinoplasty, please call or email us today and schedule a consultation at our Marietta or Woodstock office today.

What Rhinoplasty Can Do for You

Rhinoplasty can improve the function and appearance of your nose. You may have difficulty breathing, or you may be like millions of Americans and feel self-conscious about the shape of your nose. You may even choose to undergo rhinoplasty simply to enhance your other facial features. Rhinoplasty can address:

  • Width of bridge
  • Prominent dorsal hump
  • Angle of bridge
  • Shape of bridge
  • Angle of tip from upper lip
  • Size of nose
  • Width of nostrils
  • Shape of tip
  • Crooked nose

A too-large or crooked nose may be caused by genetics, illness or injury, but whatever the cause rhinoplasty can help you achieve your desired appearance. However, you should be at least 16 years old before undergoing rhinoplasty, to ensure that your nose shape and bone structure are no longer still in development.

Types of Rhinoplasty

There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: open and closed. The process for each type of surgery is similar and both can produce excellent results. Whether you undergo open or closed rhinoplasty depends on your individual circumstances, including:

  • Size and shape of nose and nostrils
  • Desired outcome
  • Choice of plastic surgeon

An open rhinoplasty consists of the surgeon making an incision across the columella, or the skin under the tip of your nose. This incision is extended into the inside of your nostrils, allowing the surgeon to retract the skin by separating it from your bone and cartilage and exposing them. This procedure may be preferred for more complicated or extensive rhinoplasty procedures. Once the desired effect has been achieved, your surgeon will replace the skin of your nose and possibly suture it in place with dissolvable stitches. You may need to wear bandages, a nose splint, or nasal airway splints while you heal.

A closed rhinoplasty procedure is similar to open rhinoplasty, but the skin of the nose is not lifted away. Instead, incisions are made on the inside of the nostrils and each step performed by loosening the skin from the cartilage and bone and performing the procedures underneath the skin. A closed rhinoplasty may require less recovery time than an open rhinoplasty.
