CO2 laser resurfacing is a highly effective treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, pre-cancerous lesions, thickening of the skin, and localized skin growths. It also effectively reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles. By removing layers of unhealthy damaged skin, CO2 laser resurfacing restores skin to a smooth, healthy, and youthful appearance.
This procedure is often performed in conjunction with microdermabrasion, face-lift, blepharoplasty and other desired procedures. After carefully discussing your goals and expectations, your surgeon can recommend the appropriate course of action for you.
Before Surgery
1. Avoid taking any medicines containing aspirin or ibuprofen during the two weeks before and after surgery.
2. Be certain you do not have a cold or sunburn the day of surgery.
3. Eat a balanced nutrient-rich diet before and after surgery. A healthy diet will help speed recovery.
4. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the procedure, unless instructed differently by our anesthesiologist.
5. Do not wear make-up or contact lenses to surgery.
6. Arrange to have someone take you home after the procedure and stay with you that evening.
The Procedure
Laser Resurfacing typically takes half an hour depending on the extent of the procedure. The procedure is performed in our offices on an outpatient basis. Patients are given general anesthesia during this procedure.
After the patient is anesthetized, the surgeon makes repeated passes over problem areas with a laser, shaving off layers of skin.
After Surgery
After the procedure is over, patients may experience considerable swelling, redness, and/or discomfort in the affected area. This is normal and will pass with time. Any pain can be controlled with medication. Swelling can be treated with cold compresses.
Patients will be instructed on how to clean and care for skin. It is important to keep skin hydrated and protected following the procedure. The new skin initially will be more susceptible to infection. As you care for your skin in the days after the procedure, the dead skin will slough off, revealing new, undamaged skin underneath. Swelling and redness may last anywhere from ten to twelve days. MPS offers a variety of skin care products such as Obagi Nu-Derm Skin Health Restoration System, SkinCeuticals Primacy Recovery System, and Biomedic for sensitized/post-operative skin that will speed recovery and enhance results.
Recovery
Most patients are back at work two weeks after the procedure but should continue to avoid sun exposure to protect and maintain their new complexion Skin will continue to visibly improve in texture and tone over the year succeeding laser resurfacing. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact our offices.
