Sclerotherapy
Marietta Plastic Surgery skin and laser center
Sclerotherapy, a sclerosing solution treatment, diminishes the appearance of spider veins. Spider veins and varicose veins affect both men and women, although they develop more frequently in women. Sclerotherapy causes the lining of the vessels to turn into scar tissue that is absorbed by the body, eventually becoming invisible. The treatment may also treat the painful aching, burning, swelling, and cramping often associated with spider and varicose veins. Sclerotherapy may not be appropriate for larger varicose veins.
Procedure
Sclerotherapy typically takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the extent of the procedure. The procedure is performed in our offices on an outpatient basis. No anesthesia is necessary.
After the Procedure
You may experience slight reddening, bruising, and tenderness around injection sites. This is perfectly normal and should subside within a few days. Brown lines or spots on the skin at the sites of the treated blood vessels may also form. These will disappear within six months.
After treatment, patients should take a walk to encourage blood circulation to help move the sclerosing solution out of the body. Patients will be asked to wear compressive support hose for three weeks.
Recovery
Patients are able to return to light activity immediately after the procedure. (No aerobic or cardio activity for 48 hours.) |
