We just read about another very sad and preventable case of botched cosmetic surgery. It's no surprise that the surgeon in question is not board certified* in plastic surgery. In fact, he's trained as an ER doctor; he just received his cosmetic surgery "training" by attending a few seminars at conferences.

In reality, his inexperience and lack of training resulted in three deaths. It is for the courts to figure out exactly what went wrong. However, it is plain to us that because he never was formally trained in plastic surgery or sanctioned by the only official plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, he was a tragedy waiting to happen.

There is no substitute for this distinction. Board certified* plastic surgeons–not dermatologists, ER doctors, internists, general surgeons, or OB/GYNs–go through years of specialized training, along with a rigorous testing and certification process. This ensures that we adhere to best practices and are experienced in all aspects of plastic surgery. So we can recommend only those procedures that are truly in the best interest of our patients.

We entered this field because we have a passion for improving people's lives by offering both elective and reconstructive cosmetic procedures. Unfortunately, many other non board certified* plastic surgeons have entered this field to earn some extra bucks.  Don't let yourself or loved ones settle for anything less than board certification* in plastic surgery–the gold standard.
