After breast augmentation, it's important to follow the post-operative instructions you've been given by your plastic surgeon. When in doubt, always refer to those first, and if you have questions that aren't answered there, please call us.

It's normal to have concerns during recovery and wonder whether what you're experiencing is expected and part of the healing process or a sign that a complication is developing. Here are some of the things you should expect after breast augmentation:

  • Pain and discomfort–It's impossible to say what your level of discomfort will be, since this varies from person to person. In general, though, your pain should respond to the prescription medication you've been given.
  • Swelling–Swelling can initially be significant, but will tend to diminish with time.
  • Bruising–The amount of bruising you experience will depend on many things, such as your body's individual response to surgery and the details of your breast augmentation.
  • Bleeding and discharge–Some amount of bleeding during the days after surgery is normal.

These are all normal and are not generally causes for concern. Signs that require attention include:

  • Pain that increases or does not respond to medication
  • Bruising or swelling that increases more than a few days after surgery, or one breast is significantly more swollen than the other
  • Significant localized warmth in one or both breasts
  • Foul odors, streaks, or colored discharge from incisions
  • Fever over 100.5 degrees

These can all be signs of a potential complication. Although not all of these are serious, in general they require additional attention to protect your health and the quality of your results. We encourage you to call us directly if you experience these.
