Causes of Breast Ptosis

Sagging, drooping breasts – a condition called ptosis – can be caused by:

  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuations

During pregnancy, your breasts swell up, which tends to stretch out the skin. After pregnancy, when swelling subsides, your breasts may not fully retract back into their original shape, leaving you with the problem of sagging. The same type of effect can be caused by major weight loss. Age is another common cause of breast ptosis; the simple force of gravity pulling on your breasts for so many years can eventually break down the elasticity of your breast tissue.

Factors to Consider Before Undergoing a Breast Lift

If you are interested in a breast lift, you should first consider:

  • If you plan to become pregnant in the near future – A breast lift itself will not interfere with pregnancy, but the physical changes that occur during pregnancy can have a negative impact on the results of a breast lift. It’s usually best to wait until you are finished having children before undergoing a breast lift.
  • If you want larger breasts in addition to improved shape – A breast lift can enhance the shape of your breasts and lift them up to a higher, more natural position on your chest, but it cannot increase the size of your breasts. If you lost a significant amount of breast volume, or simply want to go larger at the same time as your breast lift, we can discuss the possibility of combining your lift with a breast augmentation.
