If you’re bothered by the fullness beneath your chin, you’re not alone.
According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS):
67 % of people are bothered by what healthcare providers call “submental fullness.”

Kybella Before & AftersKybella is an FDA-approved medicine that is injected under the chin, or submental area, as a way to dissolve fat without the need for invasive surgery. This is a great procedure for patients with double chins who don’t have a lot of excess skin. The injection process is quick and easy and can be repeated about every four weeks until the desired look is attained. The treatment is great for both men and women alike.

What causes submental fullness?

Submental fullness due to fat beneath the chin can impact a broad range of both male and female adults. Some possible causes are:

KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin* by physically destroying fat cells

How does KYBELLA® work?

When injected into the area beneath your chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Deoxycholic acid comes from a cholesterol byproduct produced in the body that has been synthesized to dissolve the fat.
Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.

IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-PERCEPTION

KYBELLA® patients reported improvement in the visual and emotional impact of submental fat when asked how happy, bothered, self-conscious, embarrassed, old, and overweight they felt with respect to the amount of their submental fat after they received treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Your healthcare provider will help you determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. On average 2-3 treatments are needed, each spaced out about four weeks apart.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT Before MY TREATMENT SESSION?

It’s important to know that Kybella is specifically good for excess fat under the skin. It does nothing for excess skin or muscle and is only approved for use under the chin. The ideal patients are those in their 20s up to their early 40s. People older than that are likely to struggle with lax skin and would not benefit from reduced fullness in that area of the face. The product works more like injectable liposuction rather than a facelift. The patient approval rate is extremely high.

The treatment begins with a consultation to ensure the patient is properly indicated for the treatment. Afterwards, the physician uses a tool provided by the Kybella company used to create an injection grid that helps ensure proper spacing in the injection process. During this process, key areas in the neck are identified and avoided for safety.

This grid also helps the physician measure the amount of fluid needed to complete the procedure. Before the Kybella is injected, a local anesthetic can be injected to help minimize any pain.

What can I expect after my treatment session?

  1. For most patients, downtime occurred most commonly after the first treatment session
  2. You should be able to resume your daily activities, but are likely to have swelling, so
keep your social plans and work commitments in mind when scheduling your treatment
  3. Prior to your treatment session, your healthcare provider may apply ice/cold packs or
topical and/or injectable local anesthesia to the treatment area to make you more comfortable
  4. After treatment, apply ice or a cold pack to the treatment area for 10 to 15 minutes,
    as needed
