Refresh Your Look with BOTOX®
BOTOX® is the most requested medical cosmetic procedure available today. If you have deep frown lines on your forehead, between your eyebrows (glabellar lines), or at the sides of your eyes (crow’s feet), BOTOX® can minimize the appearance of those lines and provide you with a more youthful and relaxed appearance. We also offer Dysport, a very similar product manufactured by a different company.
Your Botox will be administered at Marietta Plastic Surgery located in Marietta, GA just outside of Atlanta.

BOTOX®: Myth and Fact
While Hollywood may propagate the idea of BOTOX® creating paralytic effects in your face, this is in actuality an exaggeration. BOTOX® does work by blocking nerve impulses at injection sites and reducing muscle contraction. However, your facial muscles will not experience paralysis or disfigurement when BOTOX® is correctly administered. You will still be able to smile, frown, and express other emotions without difficulty or effort.
BOTOX® is a prescribed treatment derived from botulinum toxin A and is only legally available through a licensed physician. However, the fact that you may obtain BOTOX® treatments from a general practitioner does not make him, or her, the most qualified individual to administer BOTOX® injections. A board-certified plastic surgeon has received specialized training in the anatomy of the face and how that anatomy influences your appearance, helping them understand how best to utilize BOTOX® to best effect.
Unlike many options for wrinkle correction, BOTOX® is a non-surgical procedure. It is an injectable and is only minimally invasive. While plastic surgery is quite effective, it carries with it the downside of increased risk of complications and a longer recovery time. For those looking to avoid surgery, injectables are excellent solutions.
BOTOX® is different from other injectables. Most injectable treatments are soft-tissue fillers that create immediate volume in the tissues. Rather than increasing skin volume, BOTOX® instead focuses on relaxing the muscles to smooth out the skin of the face. This makes the face appear more youthful.
Lines and Wrinkles
Muscle Overuse: The Biggest Factor
Fine lines and wrinkles form for many reasons, and one of the biggest contributing factors is overuse of the underlying muscles. People frequently repeat the same facial movements (like chewing and laughing) and expressions (like frowning and smiling); this causes the muscles to contract and stay contracted. When muscles are contracted in this way, it becomes more difficult for them to relax back into a resting state.
How BOTOX® Can Help
Contracted muscles disrupt the placid surface of the skin, causing the formation of wrinkles. BOTOX® resolves these wrinkles. Along with frown lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet, BOTOX® can also be used to resolve many other facial wrinkles. Lipstick lines near the lips, chin wrinkling, and vertical neck bands are all treatable with the help of BOTOX®.
BOTOX® Procedure
At the start of the procedure, the areas that are targeted for treatment are carefully marked. The administration of BOTOX® consists of injecting small amounts of the mild toxin into the muscles causing deep facial lines. These muscles are habitually contracted due to years of clenching and relaxing to form various expressions. BOTOX® dampens nerve impulses by blocking the muscles’ acetylcholine receptors. When the muscles are not repeatedly triggered to move, this allows these muscles to relax.
Are the Injections Uncomfortable?
You may experience slight irritation or redness in the treatment areas but may return to your regular lifestyle immediately. Because this treatment is so quick and requires no recovery time, it is very convenient and is perfect for busy professionals. BOTOX® is frequently called a “lunchtime procedure.”
Most patients do not require pain medication, though some may experience mild discomfort at the injection site. Total treatment time is about 10-15 minutes, depending on the patient.
What Benefits and Results Can Be Expected?
The results of BOTOX® injections usually takes effect in five to seven days. In the time immediately following your injections, it will be best to protect the treated areas from heavy sun.
The benefits of BOTOX® should last for about three to four months, though you may experience benefits for a slightly longer or shorter period. You may repeat treatment whenever lines and wrinkles again become prominent, but discontinuing BOTOX® treatments may allow your lines and wrinkles to again become notable. Additional treatments have been seen to have a cumulative effect on age lines.

Complementary Procedures
For the wrinkles that BOTOX® treats, it is an ideal procedure, but not all wrinkles are due to contracted muscles. If your wrinkles are due to loss or displacement of facial volume, dermal fillers can be used to smooth the skin. For fine, superficial wrinkles, laser skin resurfacing or other skin care solutions give very good results. If you are looking for more long-term results, surgical solutions such as a face lift or forehead lift may be a better option for you.
