If you have always felt that your breasts were too small or if you used to have breasts you liked but they have recently lost volume, breast augmentation (sometimes called breast enlargement) with breast implants may be the right procedure for you. Breast augmentation is not for everyone, but women who feel self-conscious about their small or saggy breasts on a daily basis may find that the procedure not only helps them look better, but feel better and experience a significantly improved quality of life. Of all plastic surgeries, breast surgeries have some of the highest rates of satisfaction.

This page provides a basic overview of breast augmentation, but every woman is different, and the best way to learn whether breast augmentation is right for you is during a personal consultation with our board certified* Atlanta plastic surgeon. We invite you to call or email us today to schedule an informative consultation with one of the plastic surgeons at Marietta Plastic Surgery today.

Basics of Breast Augmentation

The breast gets its size and shape from the fatty tissue, milk ducts, pectoral muscle, and ribs, as well as the breast skin. During breast augmentation, a breast implant is placed either behind the breast or behind the pectoral muscle to increase the size and potentially change the shape of the breast.

Breast augmentation can be used to alter:

  • Breasts that are too small
  • Breasts that have an undesired shape
  • Breasts that are out of proportion with your figure
  • Breasts that are asymmetric (of different sizes or shapes)
  • Breasts that are slightly sagging (more severely drooping breasts may require a breast lift or breast reduction)

Most women are satisfied with the results of breast augmentation. These results are long-lasting, although they may sometimes require subsequent surgeries to maintain or improve them.

Your Breast Augmentation will be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon at Marietta Plastic Surgery located in Marietta, GA just outside of Atlanta.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Breast enhancement is a procedure that can increase the size and improve the shape of your breasts. This is the primary benefit of breast augmentation, but many women see additional benefits. These may include:

  • Increased self-confidence
  • Feeling more feminine
  • Ability to comfortably wear more clothing styles
  • Increased sexual confidence and pleasure

Although none of these secondary benefits can be guaranteed, surveys of women before and after breast surgery show that a significant number see one or more of these benefits.

What Are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are solid silicone shells that contain either sterile saline (salt water) solution or silicone gel. Saline implants are filled after placement, while silicone implants come pre-filled from the manufacturer. Breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Breast augmentation, or breast enhancement, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the country. With breast augmentation, you can give yourself the body of your dreams. Breast augmentation can also be used to correct breast asymmetry or rebuild the breasts after a mastectomy procedure.

Breast augmentation can enlarge the breasts in a way that satisfies your aesthetic goals and give a boost to your self-confidence. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that typically involves the use of breast implants. Breast implants are prosthetic inserts that are used to enhance the size and shape of the breasts.

There are two major types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants are made of silicone shells and are inserted into the breast pocket empty. They are then filled with saline – a sterile saltwater solution – to give them their size and shape.

Silicone implants are pre-filled implants that are made of silicone shells and are filled with silicone gel before the breast augmentation procedure. The newest generation of silicone implants is filled with a semi-solid-state silicone gel that does not leak if ruptured.

Along with choosing a type of breast implant, patients also need to choose the size, shape, and texture of their implants. This is best done by bringing in photos of examples of chests that fit the patient’s goals.

There are a number of different surgical techniques to consider for breast augmentation. Different types of incisions are available that yield different results. The inframammary, periareolar, and transaxillary incisions are some of the most common. There are also variations on where the implant is placed in relation to the pectoral muscle.

Different techniques and implants have their own sets of pros and cons for the patient to consider. The appropriate recommendation will be made during a consultation with one of the experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons at Marietta Plastic Surgery.
