As with all surgeries, you can expect to experience some scarring after breast augmentation. In most instances, breast augmentation scarring is minimal. By strategically placing your breast augmentation incisions, using the most advanced surgical techniques, and carefully monitoring your post-operative care, our board certified plastic surgeons can ensure your scars are as discrete as possible.

At Marietta Plastic Surgery, we offer three different breast augmentation incision options in order to provide you with greater control over the location and visibility of your scars. Your options include:

  • Inframammary incision – This incision is made in the crease underneath the breast. It is the most common incision option, allowing the scar to be discretely hidden underneath the breast.
  • Periareolar incision – This incision is made around the nipple. The scar heals very well and is concealed by the change in contour and color around your nipple.
  • Transaxillary incision – This incision is made in the armpit. While this option eliminates any scarring near your breasts, the armpit scar is more noticeable than the scars produced by the other two options.

In addition to the incision option chosen, there are several other factors which may impact the visibility of your scars after breast augmentation. These include:

  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Skin type
  • Overall health
  • Lifestyle
  • Your commitment to following post-operative instructions

In order to ensure that your scars heal properly, it is important to follow our post-operative instructions very carefully. In addition, smokers will need to quit prior to surgery and throughout the breast augmentation recovery period. Smoking reduces blood flow to skin cells, prevents your body from healing properly, and may result in a more noticeable scar.
