In an effort to raise public awareness of a woman’s breast reconstruction options, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released a new study today showing that 89% of women want to SEE what breast reconstruction surgery results would look like before undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Many breast cancer patient organizations report that a majority of women want to go beyond looking at before and after photos, to actually see the results of breast reconstruction procedures, in person, and have a chance to discuss those results with survivors who’ve had the procedure.

In light of the new statistics and in preparation for the first Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day USA on October 17, 2012, ASPS issued a multimedia news release today containing the following media components:

  • Video news story featuring an ASPS Member Surgeon and breast reconstruction patient
  • TV Public Service Announcement featuring Jewel and a breast reconstruction patient
  • Jewel’s charitable song “Flower” written for the breast reconstruction awareness campaign

“When I was writing this song there were a lot of survivors that came to mind and I’m always continually amazed at how resilient women are, and how when faced with a difficult position they find the courage to say, ‘I am going to fight on and I’m even going to be better.’ And that’s what made me want to write this song,” Jewel said.

In support of the BRA Day USA campaign, Jewel will also be performing a charity concert at Plastic Surgery The Meeting on October 29, 2012 in New Orleans to honor breast reconstruction patients nationwide.  All proceeds from the concert and the sale of her song benefit the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of The Plastic Surgery Foundation. Tickets to “An Evening with Jewel” in New Orleans are now on sale.
