What Types of Wrinkles Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Treat?
There are two main types of wrinkles: dynamic and static.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the contraction of facial muscles. Whenever you smile or form another type of facial expression, your muscles contract, causing your skin to wrinkle. Youthful skin can easily spring back into position once the expression is finished (e.g. you stop smiling). Unfortunately, as you grow older the wrinkles in the skin caused by these muscle contractions can become permanent.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is designed to treat dynamic wrinkles. It works by blocking the contractions of facial muscles that are causing your wrinkles. Some of the most common types of dynamic wrinkles include:
- Crow’s feet (eye wrinkles)
- Smile lines
- Frown lines
- Forehead creases
- Lip wrinkles
In contrast, static wrinkles remain visible even when you are not forming a facial expression – they are caused by to the breakdown of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid as you age. Static wrinkles are most effectively treated by dermal fillers.
