Otoplasty Candidate

Ear surgery can be used to correct asymmetric ears, disproportionately large ears, and/or protruding ears. Otoplasy can be performed on patients of all ages – including children. However, otoplasty is not recommended until a child’s ears have stopped growing, and their body has developed enough to easily handle the procedure.

The ideal ear surgery candidate should:

• Be in strong overall health
• Free from chronic or untreated ear infections
• Have ear cartilage that is stable enough for correction
• Have realistic expectations

Any medications that could interfere with healing should be paused before and after treatment. Additionally, if you are a smoker, it is important to quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after your procedure in order to ensure you heal properly.

If you are considering otoplasty for your child, they must be at least five years old, and should be able to clearly understand the procedure, so they can raise their own concerns or decline the surgery on their own.
