Once you have decided to move forward with breast augmentation, you will need to make a series of decisions about the details of your surgery – including the size and shape of your breast implants, the fill material, and the placement method (over or under the muscle). Another important decision concerns the location of your incision.

If you would like further information about your breast augmentation options, please call us today at 770-425-0118 (Marietta) or 678-494-2380 (Woodstock) to schedule a personal consultation with one of our experienced Atlanta breast surgeons.

Periareolar Incision (Areola)

This small incision is made around the areola – the dark circular area that surrounds your nipple – in order to minimize the visibility of your scar. The periareolar incision is ideal for saline breast implants, since they are not filled until after they have been inserted into the breast tissue and therefore can be placed through a smaller incision. This location also is a good place to hide (or camouflage) the scar between the dark areola and the lighter breast skin.

Inframammary Incision (Breast Crease)

This incision is located along the crease underneath your breast, where the fold of your breast meets your body. Scarring is hidden in your natural breast fold, or can be easily concealed by a bra or swimsuit. The inframammary incision is ideal for silicone breast implants. It allows for excellent control of implant placement, and can be re-opened during revision surgery, should the need arise.

Transaxillary Incision (Armpit)

This is a less common technique that involves creating an incision in your armpit. The implant is placed through the armpit and then carefully positioned in the breast tissue. The main advantage of this technique is that there is no scarring on the breasts; however, placement may not be as precise as the periareolar and inframammary techniques. Additionally, this incision cannot be re-used during revision surgery.

The right incision type for you will depend on the type and size of breast implants you have chosen, along with your own personal preference. Scarring is an unavoidable part of surgery, but our experienced Atlanta breast surgeons take meticulous care to ensure your scars remain as faint and hidden as possible.
