What is nose surgery?

Atlanta Nose Surgery PatientNose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which reshapes the bone and cartilage that determine the shape of the nose. It is often used to correct:

  • Prominent dorsal humps
  • Large noses
  • Crooked noses
  • Disproportionate width of nose
  • Angle of nose
  • Shape of bridge or tip

What happens during the nose surgery procedure?

During nose surgery, you may be under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep. Your Marietta nose surgeon will make small incisions in the skin of your nose in inconspicuous areas, such as the insides of your nostrils or the columella (skin under the tip of your nose). He will use these incisions to access the cartilage and bone of your nose in order to reshape them and adjust their positioning if necessary. Once the procedure is complete your incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches, bandaged, and fitted with splints to be allowed to heal.

Are there different types of nose surgery?

There are two types of nose surgery:

  • Open rhinoplasty
  • Closed rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty uses incisions and folds back the skin of your nose to expose the bones and cartilage to be adjusted by your surgeon. Closed rhinoplasty uses only small incisions inside your nostrils so your surgeon can access your cartilage and nasal bones with small surgical tools. Both types of nose surgery usually require stitches but produce excellent results. Open rhinoplasty may be required for more complicated procedures, and may require a longer recovery period.

How much will my nose surgery cost?

The cost of any surgery is dependent on your personal anatomy and desired outcome. These also will determine whether you undergo an open or closed nose surgery, and will be thoroughly explained when you meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons to discuss your procedure.

I am getting married in six weeks, is this a good time to have nose surgery performed?

Not usually. While you may feel fully recovered from your nose job after a few weeks, you may still experience mild swelling for several months. The full benefits of your nose surgery will not be apparent until as much as six months after the procedure. If you are considering nose surgery before a major life event, please meet with one of our plastic surgeons to discuss your goals and expectations.
