Is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Right for You or Your Child?

Protruding or overly large ears can throw off the balance of your other facial features, becoming the first thing that people notice about you at a glance. If you are self-conscious about the way your ears look – or if your child is – you may want to consider otoplasty to improve their appearance.

Our Atlanta cosmetic surgeons are highly experienced in helping each individual patient achieve the best possible results from otoplasty. Schedule a consultation today by calling (770) 425-0118 for our Marietta office, or (678) 494-2380 for our Woodstock office.

The Ideal Otoplasty Candidate

Ear surgery can be used to correct asymmetric ears, disproportionately large ears, and/or protruding ears. Otoplasy can be performed on patients of all ages – including children. However, otoplasty is not recommended until a child's ears have stopped growing, and their body has developed enough to easily handle the procedure.

The ideal ear surgery candidate should:

  • Be in strong overall health
  • Free from chronic or untreated ear infections
  • Have ear cartilage that is stable enough for correction
  • Have realistic expectations

Any medications that could interfere with healing should be paused before and after treatment. Additionally, if you are a smoker, it is important to quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after your procedure in order to ensure you heal properly.

If you are considering otoplasty for your child, they must be at least five years old, and should be able to clearly understand the procedure, so they can raise their own concerns or decline the surgery on their own.

Questions to Ask About Otoplasty

The best way to find out if ear surgery is right for you or your child is to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified Atlanta plastic surgeons. Before you consultation, consider the following questions:

  • What exactly is it about your ears that you want to correct?
  • How long have you felt this way about your ears?
  • Do you have any specific concerns about the procedure that you want discuss?

If you are ready to discuss otoplasty in more detail, please contact Marietta Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced Atlanta facial plastic surgeons. Call (770) 425-0118 for our Marietta GA office, or (678) 494-2380 for our Woodstock GA office.
