Male Breast Reduction
Atlanta, Marietta & Woodstock, Georgia Gynecomastia
One problem that can seriously impact a man's sense of masculinity is having enlarged breasts. Since breasts are so strongly associated with femininity, the presence of breasts on a man's chest can make a man feel self-conscious when removing his shirt in front of women and other men. Sometimes enlarged breasts are associated with weight gain, but even if you have a normal body weight you may have enlarged breasts, and they can be very hard to reduce with diet and exercise. Male breast reduction, or gynecomastia treatment, is a breast surgery procedure which reshapes the contours of your chest by reducing the volume of fatty or glandular tissue underneath.
If you experience lax or too-large breasts and feel self-conscious, a male breast reduction may be the right option to help you regain your feeling of masculinity and confidence. This page contains some basic information about the procedure, but the best way to learn about whether this procedure is right for you is by scheduling a gynecomastia consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.
Candidacy for Gynecomastia
Many men suffer from having excessive breast tissue and the condition may occur from a number of causes. You may desire to undergo male breast reduction if your breasts are too large because of:
- Genetic predisposition
- Hormonal changes (increased estrogen production)
- Medication which suppresses or stimulates hormone production
- Hormone suppression from steroidal treatment
- Weight gain
You may also choose to undergo male breast reduction or recontouring because a healthy diet and exercise have not enabled you to achieve the chest shape you desire. For some men, breast tissue is never reduced by diet and exercise. In order to be considered a good candidate for gynecomastia or any plastic surgery procedures, you should:
- Be in good overall health
- Not Smoke
- Have realistic expectations of the procedure
- Desire to reduce the size and improve the shape of your pectoral area
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
The procedure for a male breast reduction may be surgical excision or use liposuction. The choice of which procedure you should undergo depends on the type of excess tissue in your breast area, and also the amount of tissue to be removed. If you have excessive fatty tissue, liposuction may be sufficient to reduce the size and improve the contour of your chest. Tumescent liposuction provides the best results at the most reasonable cost and is therefore preferred by our surgeons.
If you have excess glandular tissue or excess skin that is unlikely to contract after liposuction, a surgical male breast reduction may be necessary. This procedure consists of making incisions along the lower fold of your breast and repositioning the nipple. Temporary or permanent loss of sensation in your nipple area is a potential risk of surgery. Most patients regain nipple sensitivity within a few weeks or months of the surgery, but on rare occasions the loss of sensation is permanent.
Whether you undergo liposuction or surgical excision for your male breast reduction, you will experience long-term, satisfying results which reduce your excess breast tissue and redefine the shape of your chest in a more masculine line.
