Your rhinoplasty procedure will be customized to meet your unique needs and goals. Generally speaking, rhinoplasty is performed one of two ways:

  • Closed rhinoplasty – All incisions are made inside of the nostrils, leaving no visible scars.
  • Open rhinoplasty – Incisions are made inside of the nostrils, and one additional incision is made across the columella (the “bridge” of skin under the tip of your nose), which allows more significant alterations to be made.

Our board-certified Atlanta plastic surgeons will recommend the best approach after carefully evaluating your facial features, listening to your concerns, and helping you visualize your results using VECTRA® 3D Imaging

The nasal bone or cartilage can be adjusted or augmented in several different ways, depending on the structure of your nose and the results you are looking for. If you are undergoing a closed rhinoplasty, local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia can be used. Because open rhinoplasty procedures are usually more complex, they will need to be performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss what kind of anesthesia is best in your case.

After your rhinoplasty procedure, you will need to rest in bed with your head raised above the level of your chest in order to limit bleeding and swelling. Your nose will probably feel congested for awhile, and it will be splinted for protection and support. Internal dressings usually remain in place for three days after rhinoplasty, but in some cases they can be removed after only one day. The external splint remains in place for about two weeks on average.
